The grinding procedure is performed with a machine called a grinding machine, which employs an extremely hard finegrained grinding wheel. grinding is used to give any component the optimal surface shape or finish; in fact this process follows roughing. While roughing takes away the bulk of the residual material, grinding allows all remaining residual or excess material to be removed while giving the machined surface a high grade finish.

There are various types of grinding processes most importantly cylindrical grinding and surface grinding. The latter may be divided into tangential flat grinding and frontal flat grinding.
In tangential grinding, that concerns us more directly, the axis of the grinding wheel is parallel to the work surface.
The cutting movement and transverse movement is produced through the grinding wheel, whereas the longitudinal motion is give to the work piece, each complete longitudinal displacement corresponds to a specific lowering of the grinding wheel.
This process is generally is used to obtain uniform surfaces with a very low surface roughness, not possible through normal milling. To achieve this, the removal of material per pass is generally around 5 microns.
A very frequent practical application, is to flip the workpiece once the grinding process is complete on one side, to grind the adjacent surface giving a width of within 5 microns but also giving a very accurate parallel between the two opposite ground surfaces.
